
Two things to observe –
1. Both the international symbol ¥ and the local character 円 are used in price tags – they both mean the same thing – YEN (about 100yen to the US dollar).
2. The lower price in much smaller print (under the main price) is the pre-tax price i.e. before the 10% consumption tax is added. Foreigners with passports can buy at that cheaper price at SOME stores (mainly in tourist areas) if they spend above 5000yen (about $US50) in one transaction.
…and alcohol may be cheaper in your own country.
