(most of them) are hi-tech
Latest surveys say that over 60% (more in cities) of Japanese toilets are the high-tech type with in-built sprays and other features.
They’re like hi-tech bidets. They are for spraying you after you’ve used the toilet, blowing hot air up at you to dry you, playing noises/sounds/music to disguise any sounds you are making, … and more.
There will be a control panel usually attached to the cubicle wall, or occasionally on the side of the toilet seat.
These control panels –
- are all different (even if from the same manufacturer).
- have some (a few?) English labelled buttons – but some don’t even have Japanese language labels – just graphic symbols.
One tourist reported finding a toilet that had 23 different buttons on the control panel.
